The pair did in secret because it was a bit taboo for a hockey player not just to figure skate, but to be coached by a female. True... a lot of the best skaters have been figure skaters in the past (skinner) or been taught be figure skaters. Some of the guys that have made big improvements in skating have been taught by figure skaters.
